About the qualifications

These new qualifications in promoting the mental health and well-being of older people are designed to shift the focus of frontline practice with all older people from managing problems to promoting positive well-being in its broadest sense. The qualifications aim to build on the previous work and life experiences of learners and are relevant to people who are new to their role as well as those who already have experience of working with older people. The qualifications are designed to meet the requirements for the new Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). There may also be opportunities to secure funding for these qualifications through the regional strategic health authority such as Joint Investment Framework (JIF) funding or by making specific representation to Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Professionals within the social care sector are required to undertake Continuous Professional Development (CPD) by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). Those who use this resource will be able to gain CPD points.

About the materials

Grounded in current research and best practice these resources are designed to challenge learners' attitudes to, and assumptions about, older people and to bring about real change to frontline practice across the range of service settings.

The materials consist of four resources in total: the Level 2 and Level 3 tutor manuals and the Level 2 and Level 3 learner workbooks, providing a complete teaching and learning programme in promoting the mental health and well-being of older people. The tutor manuals will support trainers to deliver a learning programme to enable candidates to meet the City & Guilds assessment criteria for each qualification. The activities in the learner workbooks can be used by candidates to provide evidence that they have met some of the criteria.

The materials fully support the qualifications but can equally be used for stand-alone study.

Trainer manuals

The trainer manuals comprise workshop activities, learning resources (OHPs, handouts, video clips) and guidance on successfully supporting learners through the whole learning and assessment process.

Learner workbooks

The practical activities in the learner workbooks are supported by tips on effective learning and are based on learners' practical experiences. Clear learning outcomes and practical case studies are cross-mapped to assessment criteria so that the resources can be used for effective self-study.
